About
Wāhine in Circus Arts is a free social circus program for nā wāhine ʻōiwi and nā kaikamāhine ʻōiwi (native Hawaiian women ages 18 + and native Hawaiian girls ages 13+). As circus opportunities increase in the islands, we want to be sure these opportunities reach the ʻōiwi community. This class is great for any wāhine at any level of movement experience looking to learn and connect. It's also a fantastic addition to those who already have a dance, movement or physical storytelling practice. Through weekly aerial circus classes, the program aims to build and strengthen community ties and understanding through dance/movement classes, shared-skill building, and cultural connection. Optional weekend classes in flexibility, hand balance and other circus arts will also be offered periodically. Why aerial arts? At our studio, Aerial Arts is grounded in body positivity, curiosity, and self exploration. We focus on nurturing a positive connection to one’s body in all of its shapes and sizes, allowing us to freely move and express in a unique way. Aerial arts training and performance can be a vehicle to tell a story, keep ourselves and community healthy and vibrant - all while learning a new and exciting skill. With support from the Women's Fund of Hawai'i, Aerial Arts Hawaii of Hilo is proud to make this special offering to increase access to and participation in circus arts in East Hawai’i. FAQ IS IT OKAY IF I HAVE NO AERIAL EXPERIENCE? Yes! This is an intro friendly program. WHY IS THIS PROGRAM ONLY FOR NATIVE HAWAIIAN WOMEN/GIRLS? This program is an effort to specifically engage with and support Hawaiian women interested in circus arts. I DONT IDENTIFY AS NATIVE HAWAIIAN, CAN I REGISTER? This is for female-identifying native Hawaiians; we are not here to interrogate identity, and trust that those who do not identify as native Hawaiian will refrain from registering. DO I HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY WEEK? We look for participants who can commit to the weekly schedule, with understanding absences may occur. Note on time: Beginning May 12th the program will extend to 75 minutes. - - - - Aerial Arts Hawai’i LLC is fully insured for aerial and acrobatic sports to protect our students and our instructors. That said, aerial is a high risk sport, even the gentler varieties like aerial yoga, and should be treated as such. All students will be required to fill out a liability release form prior to attending class.
